FAQ

What is drone photography?

Drone photography is a form of aerial photography captured by the operator remotely from the ground using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), more commonly called a drone.

Unlike photography shot from the ground, aerial photography offers a host of benefits to a range of businesses, especially those in construction, civil engineering, surveying and development. Drones can access locations and environments that are often out of reach, unsafe or inaccessible, providing valuable data that may not otherwise be possible.

Do you need a licence to fly a drone?

Anyone can fly a drone as a hobby or for personal use, providing they follow Civil Aviation Authority laws.

However, flying a drone for commercial purposes requires a Permission for Commercial Operation (PfCO) from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

A PfCO is gained by completing various courses, exams and practical assessments before submitting a written Operations Manual to the CAA for approval.

Midi Aerial Photography operates drones under a PfCO with extended permission to fly at night.

What area do you cover?

Working nationally but based in Wigan, Greater Manchester, ideally located between Manchester and Liverpool with easy motorway access across the north west, Yorkshire, north Wales and West Midlands.

We easily cover and have great knowledge of these areas but regularly work throughout the UK.

How much do you charge?

This is a difficult question to answer generically as costs depend on your requirements, the size, extent and location of the project etc.

Travel fees are chargeable at 45p per mile plus parking/toll charges. Travel time is not charged for local work but has to be allowed for work at a distance.

For an accurate quotation or for further details please email [email protected] with as much detail of your project as possible.

How far do drones fly?

Legal flight limits are 400 feet high from ground level and 500m horizontally fro the drone operator.

Special permission can be applied for to extend those limits.

Can drones fly at night?

Yes they can, but only with special permission that has to be applied for to the CAA.

Midi Aerial Photography has permission to fly at night.

Can you fly a drone anywhere?

No you can’t. Drone operations are restricted by law to avoid or limit flights in certain areas eg airports, certain government buildings, restricted airspace, congested areas.

Drone operators have to keep certain distances from buildings, people etc that are not under their control.

Bearing all this in mind, extensive flight feasibility studies / risk assessments must be completed prior to any flight to ensure all operations are carried out safely, professionally, and within the law.

Where can I see more of your work?

You can find more photographs on the Midi Photography social media pages. TwitterInstagram and LinkedIn.

This website and social media are not exhaustive libraries so if there is something similar you need but cannot find, we may well have it in the archive library.
